Learn English without trying on a culinary retreat in rural England. Enjoy cooking and conversation with native speakers and put your English into practice in real life situations.

Description:

Beckside Hall is an immersive retreat where the hosts, Paul and Dinah, have combined their shared passions for entertainment travel and food, and hope to share them with visitors from around the world.

As enthusiastic home-cooks, Paul and Dinah, have learned from their travels, that nothing goes together so well as good food, wine and good conversation.

Therefore, they have decided to transform their home into a culinary retreat where guests can learn English by getting hands on in the kitchen.

A stay at Beckside Hall should leave you with a real flavour of how life is lived in rural England. Our aim is that your stay should teach you lessons about English language and culture that cannot be learned from a book.

Through planning and preparing their own favourite recipes alongside those of their guests you will experience valuable opportunities to put your English into practice in real life situations.

It does not matter if you’re a complete beginner, or you just want the chance to practice with native speakers, Beckside Hall is the perfect place for you to come to learn English without even trying.

The Experience:

Beckside Hall is an immersive retreat where guests learn English through real life situations. Each evening guests will prepare and cook a meal along with their hosts, Paul and Dinah.

Paul and Dinah’s passion for cooking from first principles means guests get involved in every step of the process, from curating the evening’s menu to going to the neighbouring market towns to pick up the fresh produce.

Depending on the season, guests may even cook with fruit and vegetables grown in Beckside Hall’s garden.

Each day the guests will collaborate with their hosts to decide upon a menu for the day, a menu that will incorporate local and seasonal produce. Guests will then be taken into the neighbouring market towns where it is up to them to put their English into practice and order the ingredients for the planned menu.

Your hosts will be ready and willing to help  whenever necessary. Meals are then prepared communally with the hosts and other guests, providing guests with the opportunity to bring culinary ideas from their own cultures to the table as well. Through this sharing of ideas and experiences, we hope to get the English conversation flowing in a relaxed environment where all guests can put their English into practice without fear of judgement, regardless of their level.

In between cooking and exploring the nearby towns, guests will have plenty of time to relax and enjoy the uninterrupted countryside that surrounds Beckside. The garden provides the perfect setting to catch up on holiday reading, or in the winter months, snuggle up by the open fire.

With the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District national park on our doorstep, there is no shortage of walking routes for guests to choose from in order to work up an appetite for their next meal. Paul and Dinah will also organise day trips to nearby tourist attractions, cinema and theatre events subject to availability and demand.

Location:

Beckside Hall is nestled between two national parks of unrivalled natural beauty, the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. The uninterrupted countryside surrounding Beckside offers tranquillity, peace and calm, far from the chaos of city life.

Should you wish to arrive by Train, your hosts will meet you at the West Coast mainline station at Oxenholme.

The Hosts:

Paul and Dinah are self-taught cooks who are constantly expanding their culinary knowledge, their travels to far-flung corners of the world continue to inspire them.
